5 Minute Conversations
Medium: Installation, dialogue, sound performance, text, participation - 2015

'5 Minute Conversations' is an investigational platform where dialogical methods act as an integral component of the process of the artwork’s production. The project features one-on-one dialogues and uses the generated information as the material for a live sound performance, executed by the participants. The temporality of dialogue and sound as media opens up possibilities to investigate the outcome of the project in other dynamic formats. For instance, within the environment of the internet, the project explores how the documentation of physical activities within a temporal short-lived event can morph into other kinds of representations through digital mediumization.

ART AS A SITUATION THAT IS COMMERCIALIZED AND INSTITUTIONALIZED.

PERFORMANCE ART THAT WAS SEEN AS KIND OF OUTSIDE OF THE INSTITUTION IS NOW INSTITUTIONALIZED.

THE ART TODAY, WANTS TO SELL SOMETHING AS AN EXPERIENCE ECONOMY.

ART BECOMES A DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE THAT SOMEHOW IS GOOD FOR YOU AND TAKING AWAY

THE ELEMENT OF CRITICALITY.

THE BEHOLDER HAS BECOME THE CONSUMER OF ART EXPERIENCES.

IN CONCEPTUAL ART THE BEHOLDERS POSITION TOWARDS THE ARTWORK WAS BROUGHT INTO

PLAY BUT PROBLEMATIZED.

IN A CAPITALIST SYSTEM THERE IS AN INCREASING PROFESSIONALIZATION OF THE ARTISTS.

THE OPTIONS OF OPERATING OUTSIDE OF THAT HAS BEEN RESTRICTED BECAUSE OF EDUCATION

BECOMING A BUSINESS.

ARTISTS IN THE 60S WERE ABLE TO FUNCTION MORE INDEPENDENTLY FROM THE ART MARKET.

THE MUSEUMS AND ART MARKET HAS BECOME CO-CONSPIRATORS IN TERMS OF WHO SHOWS WHERE.

THERE IS A LIMITATION OF SPACE FOR THE CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS WORKING OUTSIDE OF THE MARKET.

THE ROLE OF THE MUSEUM USED TO CREATE TASTE NOW IT MANAGES POPULATIONS.

CARSTEN HOLLER IS THE PERFECT ARTIST FOR THE ERA OF POPULATION MANAGEMENT.

THE BOURGEOISIE VERSES AVANT-GARDE IS OVER.

TASTE IS DECAYED AND IS DEAD.

TASTE AS THE PROJECT OF MAKING BETTER PERSONS IS OVER.

THE ROLE OF THE ARTIST IS TO REARRANGE THE WORLD.

JAMAIS VU = NEVER SEEN

ARTISTS SHOULD GET IN THE WAY OF THE NON-ARTIST

POLITICIANS CHANGE THE LIFE CHANCES OF ARTISTS,

SINCE POLITICIANS ARE GETTING OUT OF POLITICS MAYBE ITS A GOOD TIME FOR ARTIST TO GET INVOLVE IN THE POLITICS.

THE STATE FUNDED ART SCHOOL IN THE UK IS INTENDED TO DEFEND AGAINST THE POSSIBILITY OF CULTURAL DECAY UNDER INDUSTRIAL CAPITALISM BUT IT ALSO HAS CAPITAL INSIDE IT LIKE THE LIFE BOAT WITH A TIGER IN IT IN THE FILM 'LIFE OF PI'

WHAT KINDS OF VALUES HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED AS A PARTICIPANT IN THIS PROJECT? I EXPERIENCED HOW GOOD IT IS WHEN SOMEONE LISTENS TO YOU

HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ANY FORM OF TRANSACTION DURING YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE PROJECT? I FELT AS IF MY VALUES WERE BEING PUT TO WORK IN A SOCIAL SITUATION - BUT NOT IN EXCHANGE FOR MONEY!

ART SHOULD BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF OUR LIVES AND DETACHES ITSELF FROM PRIVILEGE AND SOME OF OUR HISTORY THAT DEFINES WITH VERY ACCURATE SETS OF PRIVILEGE AND GENIUS.

WE SHOULD NOT SEE ART AS A COMMODITY AND SEE IT MORE AS ASSET OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS AND PARTNERSHIPS.

AESTHETIC IS RELATIVE TO CONTEXT.

HOW WE DEFINE AESTHETIC?

SOME AESTHETIC IS ROOTED IN THE COMMUNITY AND THE PRACTICALITY OF MAKING, SUCH AS FARMING AND AGRICULTURE, FOOD GROWING, SELF HOUSE BUILDING ETC.

WE SHOULD REINVENT THE IDEA OF CRAFT.

IT DOESN’T MATTER IF WE CALL IT ART OR NOT AS LONG AS IT IMPROVES PEOPLE’S LIVES.

ART HELPS TO CREATE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF PEOPLE SITUATIONS.

THE PROCESS OF CHANGING THE VALUE OF ART REQUIRES TIME, TRUST AND THE ART ESTABLISHMENT ITSELF REQUIRES CHANGE.

Monotron

Monotron is a simple analogue synthesizer that was used in this project with the purpose of producing sound performance, by the participation of individuals. This shaped the third phase of the project. After the transformation of text into audio files participants were encouraged to use the device to create their own sound performance. An example of this phase has been documented in the video below.
