Acts of Translation

Exploring the context of immersion and intervention, Acts of Translation connected a series of components that materialised from the experience of an artist working with archives.

The display incorporated sections from the artist book that have been translated into various visual forms. The book, How to See the Unheard, provided the locus for a core of references that emerged from a year-long residency at the Museum & Study Collection and the British Artists’ Film & Video Study Collection. This residency enabled exploration into the relationality of objects in the archives, and provided time to consider methods of liberation, with artworks that describe a more collective representation.

Each component of this exhibition was seen as an alternative translation from a selection of material in the artist’s book; aiming to present an expanded notion of the book as well as the immersive act of engaging with archives and collections. By connecting with past contexts and examining their agency in contemporary time, these acts of translation can contribute to create an imaginary field where stories, narratives, facts and fictions can unfold and contribute to reimagine our cultural constructions to establish better conditions for living.
